Heart Bowls!

Hi Friends, my name is Katie and I am the co-founder and owner of Heart Bowls. Pictured here with me is my French Husband Gwen, but he isn’t the one who started this business with me. Lets be real, he doesn’t do much at Heart Bowls at all except eat the food and drink the amazing coffee!

I started Heart Bowls with one of my best friends, Jamie, which I will get to later. I was born and raised in beautiful Sandpoint Idaho, and after high school I left for college and ended up traveling to Australia to volunteer for a non-profit called Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, now known as Sea Shepherd Global (you can check them out here).

It was volunteering for this incredible organization that changed my life forever. I met my husband Gwen there, and I was introduced to eating a whole food plant based diet, veganism and environmentalism that incorporated all aspects of living into a practical lifestyle. It is easy to say that it was the most impactful period of my life.

Heart Bowls started back in 2019, I had moved back to Sandpoint with Gwen and we quickly developed a great group of friends who all loved the outdoors and eating whole food plant based. The only issue was, there wasn’t anywhere to eat that matched up with our values.

We valued inclusivity, equality for all humans, all living beings and the planet.

My friend Jamie Terry and I often joked about starting a food business together, and one day we just said, let’s do it! So we started.

We started with our why, our mission and our vision for a healthier happier planet.

We opened Heart Bowls Food Truck summer of 2019, to bring the healthy happy food that we eat every day to our community.

We believe the food we choose to eat is a significant tool to make change in the world and in our lives.

However, there can be so many hurdles to eating nourishing food; affordability, accessibility, prep time, knowledge, and wading through myths and gimmicks. Plus, some people just don’t like to cook! We want to lower some of those hurdles for you. That’s why we started making our own delicious, affordable food at home and now we want to share it with you!

How did we come up with the food we serve?

Well, we have been eating this plant based, vegan, gluten free food every day for years; so it was a natural place for us to start. Açaí bowls, smoothie bowls, smoothies, rice bowls, salads and healthy treats are just the start of what we are creating to help our community.

“But how do we start?” “And where do we find a food truck?” We didn’t know because neither one of us had opened a business before! We started meeting for a few hours each week, making lists, brainstorming, reading business books, reaching out to local business owners for help, and slowly a new path started to take shape. Finding our groove at first felt like trail building; like digging in the dirt for answers, clearing away brush to find our way, but pretty quickly we found ourselves running into the wilderness of business ownership with more ease.
